A project for a “Faith Garden” for the Aegean resort of Kuşadası will serve as both a gesture promoting tolerance and understanding between religions and an attraction for visitors to the area.
The project has been spearheaded by the Kuşadası Businessmen Association (KUSİAD) and last week received the approval of Aydin Municipality, under whose jurisdiction Kuşadası lies.
KUSİAD Chairman Oğuz Şahin noted that the garden would be the biggest of its kind in Europe and that work on it would begin in April, with construction taking about a year.
Aydın Deputy Governor Nurdoğan Kaya revealed that the garden would cost an estimated $19.5 million. He also noted that the construction of such a site was a very sensitive issue. “This project was prepared by consulting the representatives of the monotheistic religions. This project will embrace all religions.”
The garden will be built on an 18,000 square meter plot in Kuşadası's Çamlık district, in which different areas will be allocated to the three major monotheistic religions. The mosque, church and synagogue on the grounds will be the same size. The project will also include a conference center.
